Throughout life, we experience events and interactions that make us feel and behave in certain ways. This is typical. For example, a teenager may experience a breakup and cry.
Some individuals, however, respond to these events, or stimuli, in a more extreme or even erratic manner. The same breakup could lead to intense or even physical fighting, self-harm, abuse of drugs, and so on.
Learning to regulate these emotions is important, and can even benefit all individuals no matter how they respond. One way to learn is DBT.
What is DBT?
Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) was developed in the 1970s to help people whose emotional responses to stimuli were difficult to control and put themselves or others at risk.
PsychCentral writes, “DBT theory suggests that some people’s arousal levels in such situations can increase far more quickly than the average person’s, attain a higher level of emotional stimulation, and take a significant amount of time to return to baseline arousal levels.”
DBT, as a therapy, utilizes a variety of modules, skills, and concepts to return control, and thereby power, to the individual experiencing these emotions.
“Between stimulus and response there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom.” -Viktor E. Frankel
The Modules
DBT is based on four major skill modules:
- Mindfulness
- Interpersonal Effectiveness
- Distress Tolerance
- Emotion Regulation
